Howard Keal, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for the the Malton and Thirsk constituency which includes Pickering, is married to Di. They have three daughters, Hannah (18), Molly (15) and Emily (13), who all went to - or are still going to - Lady Lumley's School, Pickering.
 
He has been a journalist for 18 years, followed by 12 more as a PR and is now a freelance communications manager. He first became involved in community life as a cub reporter and with Di has gone on to campaign in support of people needing a better deal from the authorities and Government.
 
Howard has been closely involved with Pickering Flood Defence Group for a several years and continues with its members to fight for defences to prevent another flood. He and Di know what it means to be flooded having seen their home under up to four feet of water. He wants the same level of protection for Pickering that he and Di fought for and won for Malton, Norton and Old Malton.
 
Among other interests is a role as a director with the YMCA in Norton which provides support and a place to live for young people. He's a keen gardener given the chance and is pleased this year that there has at last been just enough sun to allow his buddleia to live up their name of the butterfly bush!
